{Merck Index - © 1952 by Merck & Co., Inc.}

Zinc Sulfate: White vitriol; zinc vitriol. ZnSO4 • 7H2O; mol. wt. 287.56. Anhydrous salt 56.14%, H2O 43.86%, Zn 22.74%, ZnO 28.30%, SO4 33.41%. It is at least 99.5% pure. The technical grade is about 98% pure.

Colorless, odorless crystals or white granules or powder; astringent taste. Efflorescent in dry air. m. at about 50° when rapidly heated; at 100° loses 6H2O; at 200° loses all H2O; decomposes above 500°. One gram dissolves in 0.6 ml. water, 2.5 ml. glycerol; insoluble in alcohol. The aq. soln. is acid to litmus; pH about 4.5. Keep well closed.

Use: As mordant in calico-printing; preserving wood and skins; with hypochlorite for bleaching paper; manuf. lithopone and other zinc salts; clarifying glue; electrodepositing Zn; also as reagent in anal. chemistry.

Grades available: Reagent, U.S.P., technical.

Med. Use: 0.25 to 1.5% soln. as topical astringent, styptic. Has been used as an emetic.

Toxicity: 45 g. reported fatal.

Vet. Use: As Med. Use.

Zinc Sulfate - Dried: ZnSO4 • H2O; mol. wt. 79.46. Anhydrous salt 89.96%, H2O 10.04%, Zn 36.43%, ZnO 45.35%, SO4 53.53%.

White powder or granules. Soluble in water; insoluble in alcohol.

Note: This form of zinc sulfate does not cake as the zinc sulfate heptahydrate does, and hence is more convenient for use during the warm season and in warm climates.

Commercially available. usually contains 15-20% water of hydration.

White to grayish-white or yellowish powder. When containing water, it slowly oxidizes in air to sulfate. When free from water and previously ignited in an inert atmosphere, it is stable in the air if kept dry. Insoluble in water, alkalies; soluble in dil. mineral acids.

Use: Pigment for paints, oilcloths, linoleum, leather. dental rubber, etc., especially in the form of lithopone; mixed with ZnO as "mineral white." Anhydrous zinc sulfide is used in X-ray screens and with a trace of a radium or mesothorium salt in luminous dials of watches, etc.; also in television screens.

Grades available: Reagent, technical.
