Alloxantin, Uroxin:
C8H6N4O8 2H2O; mol. wt. 322.19. C 29.82%, H 3.13%, N 17.39%. Cryst. powder. On exposure to air becomes red. Becomes yellow at 225°; decomposes at 253-255°. Sparingly soluble in cold water, alcohol or ether. Its aq. soln. is acid; reduces Ag salts and gives a blue ppt. with Ba(OH)2 soln.Keep tightly closed.
Commercially available.
Toxicity: Diabetogenic.
