Cobalt Chloride. Cobaltous chloride.
CoCl2 6H2O; mol. wt. 237.95. Anhydr. salt 54.57%, H2O 45.43%, Co 24.77%, Cl 29.8%.Dark-red, slightly deliquesce, monoclinic crystals. d2525 1.924. m. 86°. When heated at 110-120° a blue anhydr. chloride is obtained. Soluble in 1.1 parts water, 2.5 parts alcohol; soluble in ether, acetone, glycerol. The concentr. aq. soln. is red, but becomes blue when heated or when treated with concentr. HCl or with alcohol.
Keep well closed.
Use: Sympathetic ink, barometers, hygrometers, galvanoplating; painting on glass and porcelain; absorbent for military poison gas and ammonia.
