For over fifty years, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart has served as the “mother church” of the Diocese of Winona and as the site of a vibrant community of faith. We undertake this “Heart of the Matter” renovation and renewal project with confidence in the guidance of the Spirit and the blessings of God.
A cathedral is an important church in the life of the diocese. It is the bishop's church, the place of his chair (cathedra). The cathedra is the primary symbol of his teaching and governing role in the local church. But a building does not a parish make. It is the community which worships in that space that truly forms the Church. That is why the early Christian community called their place of worship, domus ecclesiae, the “house of the Church.”
The process of renovating a church building is a significant event in the life of any faith community. It can only be undertaken after prayerful reflection, study of the Church's teaching and legislative documents, and consultation with diocesan and parish leadership. The past four years have seen much work in bringing about a plan to enhance our worship, ministry and worship facilities.
As Bishop Harrington and Fr. Sauer indicated in their letter announcing the renovation, “This is an exciting time for our parish community as we celebrate our history and look to our future. It is also a profound opportunity to join together in sharing the love of the Sacred Heart of Christ.”
What follows are frequently asked questions and our response to those questions. If you have further questions please contact Fr. John Sauer, Cathedral rector, at 507-452-4770.
