Early 1980's

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart underwent a liturgical renovation and updating to bring the arrangement of the Cathedral into line with new directives called for by the Second Vatican Council and to improve the acoustics of the worship space.

1996 - 1997

We begin to identify maintenance issues and needs for updating the Cathedral.

1997

Fr. Sauer approaches Bishop Vlazny for permission to start to address these issues in a systematic way. With the announcement of the bishop's appointment as Archbishop of Portland, Oregon, no further steps are taken.

1998- 99

Interim period between Bishop Vlazny and Bishop Harrington.

Fall, 2000

Fr. Sauer speaks to Bishop Harrington about our needs.

October 25, 2000

Architect Bill Brown leads parish and diocesan personnel in discussing process, needs and time lines. These individuals made a recommendation to move forward.

January 9, 2001

A second, similar, meeting takes place with liturgical consultant Carol Frenning and involves parish staff, Pastoral Council, Finance Council and Liturgy Committee. Each of these leadership groups supported taking the next step but questions of scope, cost and timing were raised.

January, 2001

The results of these preparatory meetings were shared with Bishop Harrington who approved the beginning of a formal process. A letter announcing the project was sent to parishioners and a steering committee was established.

May, 2001

The steering committee is formed and studies Built of Living Stones, the U.S. Bishops' document on the building and renovation of churches.

August, 2001

The steering committee recommends hiring of John Buscemi, an internationally recognized liturgical consultant.

January/February, 2002

John Buscemi facilitates three parish gatherings to widen the conversation. These gatherings produced concept statements which will guide the process.

April, 2002

Hire the firm of Groth and Smies (now called Groth Design Group) to assist us in developing a master plan. Paul Barribeau is assigned to the project. This will include options for our present project as well as long-term goals.

Spring, 2002

Bishop Harrington announces Seeds of Faith Campaign. A portion of the money raised by the Diocesan Campaign will be dedicated to the renovation of the Cathedral.

December, 2002

Preliminary plans are shared with the parish after all Masses.

January, 2003

Fundraising campaign begins as part of Seeds of Faith. The campaign for the Cathedral renovation proceeds under the name Heart of the Matter.

June, 2003

Major portion of campaign is completed. Pledges of almost $900,000 are made to the Heart of the Matter Campaign.

June, 2003 - present

Plans are rescaled and revised in light of fundraising success. Dialogue on plans with diocesan personnel, parish leadership groups.

Fall, 2003

Discussions on relocation of the organ proceed with various organ builders.

October, 2003

Steering committee travels to Rochester to tour St. John the Evangelist Church and meet with staff to discuss process used to renovate that church.

January, 2004

Members of steering committee travel to Madison to discuss design with Paul Barribeau and John Buscemi.

March, 2004

Selection of Wapasha Construction as our general contractor.
Organization of organ study committee.

April, 2004

Organ committee makes recommendation to steering committee.

May, 2004

Plans are presented to Diocesan Consultors who ask for a reworking of the sanctuary platform and choir area.

August, 2004

New plans are presented to steering committee who are in consensus to proceed with next stage of design.

September, 2004

Revised plans are presented to steering committee.

October, 2004

Further research into the pipe organ design leads to additional visits to instruments in Collegeville, St. Cloud, and the Twin City area.

December, 2004

Father Sauer and Jim Stolpa visit St. Therese Church in Deephaven and St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Bloomington to hear the organs built by the Reuter company.

January, 2005

A letter of intent is signed with the Reuter Organ Company

September 2005
