Stannous Chloride:
Tin dichloride; tin protochloride. SnCl2 2H2O; mol. wt. 225.65. Anhydrous salt 84.03%, H2O 15.97%, Sn 52.60%, Cl 31.43%.Colorless crystals; absorbs oxygen from air and forms insoluble oxychloride. d. 2.71. m. 37 38° when rapidly heated; decomposes on strong heating. Soluble in less than its own wt. of water; with much water it forms an insoluble basic salt; very soluble in dil. or in concentr. hydrochloric acid; also soluble in alcohol, ethyl acetate, glacial acetic acid, sod. hydroxide soln.
Keep tightly closed, in a cool place.
Use: As reducer of indigo in dyeing; as mordant in dyeing with cochineal; manuf. goldpurple and lakes; tinning by galvanic methods; reducer in manuf. dyes; removing ink stains; in yeast revivers; silvering glass; as reagent in anal. chemistry.
