at. wt. 52.01; at. no. 24; valence 2-3-6. Discovered in 1797 by Vauquelin. Obtained from chrome ore (chromite FeCr2O4) by a silicothermic or aluminothermic process. Steel-gray, lustrous metal; hard as corundum and less fusible than platinum Takes a high polish. d. 7.1. m. 1900°. b. 2480°. Soluble in dil. HCI or H2SO4; insoluble in HNO3; attacked by caustic alkalies and alkali carbonates. Not oxidized by air, even in presence of much moisture.Use: In manuf. of chrome-steel or chrome-nickel-steel alloys (stainless steel); for greatly increasing resistance and durability of metals; for chromeplating of other metals.
