Diego Mulligan is an avid explorer of new ideas, and unusual places and people. As a generalist, he sees and works to restore the subtle connections which transcend the separations in our culture.
Growing up in the Bahama Islands as an American expatriot, he was part of a multi-cultural working class community of pioneers, land developers and seafarers. Diego, whose birth father is Alta Castillion Spanish, was seduced by the embracing beauty of Earth's oceans at an early age on the coral reefs of Grand Bahama.
In 1968 Diego began his career in radio, hosting top-rated shows in small towns and major cities from Virginia's Shenandoah Valley to Miami's Gold Coast. He was one of the first to program Album Oriented Rock music as an alternative to Top 40, and went on to program the now-popular Modern Country Crossover format.
Having protested the draft during the sixties, Diego was one of the first to join the all-volunteer military in 1973. He became an FAA-licensed air traffic controller and worked at one of Europe's busiest joint-use airports. Here he earned the nickname 'Emergency Mulligan', due to the high number of crashes and mishaps-none of them Diego's doing-which coincidentally occurred during his shifts.
After a near-death experience himself, Diego left ATC and entered the exciting new field of Sustainable Community Development. This took him to projects in Europe and Africa, where he helped found Green Deserts (1978), the Tunisian Institute of Appropriate Technology (1980), and the Community Economic & Ecological Development Institute based in Santa Fe (1988).
Diego combines his sustainable development experience with a solid commercial broadcasting background to bring in-depth understanding and professional skill to Connections. Ten years in Santa Fe doesn't make Diego an expert on all our local issues, but you can expect him to ask the right questions and dig for some real answers. His somewhat irreverent humor will also add a welcome dash of levity to the intense gravity of today's problems.
Diego composted his rose-colored, conservative credentials after interviewing Ronald Reagan up close in an elevator one day. So, has Diego swung to the left ? Is he now a card-carrying P.C. (politically correct) liberal? Don't count on it. But depend on Diego to bring you exciting dialogue, inspiring stories and stimulating ideas about life, liberty and the pursuit of a New American Dream.
