by Ruth Korder We have exciting news about the renovation of the Cathedral. After months of planning, designing and redesigning, the project is getting closer to the actual start date! A pre-bid meeting was held on December 19 in the Cathedral. About 20 contractors attended the meeting which was conducted by Brian Buelow, Wapasha Construction, and Bob Lodel, Groth Design Group. Contractors were given a tour through the building, questions were answered and the plans were discussed. Bids will be closed on January 12. The building committee will meet on January 24 to review the bids. While we are waiting for bids to close work will still go on. The bids for removing and refinishing the pews and for asbestos abatement will be awarded prior to January 24. The organ will be removed early in January by the contracted builder, Reuter Organ Company. They will store the organ components (including the pipes) until a new organ can be constructed. After the organ has been completely removed, the pews will be taken out. The necessary number will be refurbished and refinished to be used again in the renovated space. When the pews have been removed the carpet and floor tile will be removed by an asbestos abatement company. While the tile has been found to have asbestos in it, the mastic does not, thus decreasing the expense and difficulty of removal. The preparation of the floor for a new surface will be done by the flooring contractor. The exact date of removal of the pews has not been determined; however, we are anticipating that it would be the third week in January. When the date is set, Masses will move to Holy Family Hall. The orientation in the hall will be similar to the orientation we will see in the renovated body of the church. The school hot lunch program will continue in Holy Family Hall. This will, of course, be an additional burden on the Cathedral maintenance staff so any help parish members can give will be very much appreciated. The Cathedral store will be located “in the closet” in Holy Family Hall. People who have attended the monthly bingos will be familiar with this temporary location. Perpetual Adoration will be held in the main chapel at Saint Anne of Winona. A number of sites were considered and visited prior to making the decision to move to Saint Anne. The Monday night quilting group will (Continued on page 2) |
