Bill Kuhl's Hobby Resume

  Introduction

Hobbies are great outlet for ones creative talents and provide a fun learning environment. Skills learned in hobbies often can be utilized between hobbies and other aspects of your life as well. With my interest in photography and recently video, my talents in these areas have been useful in promoting my activities in model aviation.

New July 17, 2009 - AMA Cub Website - Where it is Used

As my website passed the quarter million mark in number of visits, I decided it would be a good time to try to figure out how people were using my website. Darcy Whyte, the designer of the Squirrel and webmaster of Rubber-power.com helped me setup Google Analytics on my website. This gave me some idea to what people were searching for and which sections of the website had the most appeal. I also did some web searches to find who had referred to my website. Admittedly I have not added much content for awhile other than the videos.

From Google Analytics I found that after the opening webpage, the next most popular section on my website was on the rubber motor. This could partially be because an ornithopter website had linked to this part of my website. The next most popular section was on my flying wing design, Tweety Bird.

For search terms the most popular were; rubber band airplane, model airplanes, delta dart, flying wing and AMA Cub. The website referring the most traffic was the Aeromanics followed by The Science Toymaker.

I noticed an educational website was sending a fair amount of traffic my way and decided to follow the link back. There were many model aviation resources listed so I emailed the professor to find out a little more about the course; this was his reply:

"The course is a first year seminar where the students are to be exposed to the rigors of college reading and writing for the first time. It is left up to the various profs how they do that.

I approach it *partly* as "reading and following technical directions" and "writing instructions for others to follow." So it gives me a good excuse - er, reason to have students read about airplanes and flying, and then build (and design and build) various model aircraft.

The Denny Dart and the students mods and ideas from it were a very rewarding part of the course."

I also did a browser search looking for websites by searching on AMA Cub and my name, more interesting results. The AMA Cub website was listed as a resource in a couple of large educational documents. One was a 318 page document used in an Introduction to Technology I course. The document name was; "Georgia's Connecting Mathematics and Science to Technology Education".

Another writing-based course that my website was referenced to was: "Orville and Wilbur Wong and the Fantastic Flying Machines" by Rachael Miller

"In addition to the language arts study and project regarding the book Dragonwings, the students will also explore, investigate, and learn about the principles of flight. The students will be utilizing the Internet to learn about flight as well as build demonstrative models."

Amazing to see model aviation is being incorporated in language skills course work.

For the question, "how can you make a rubberband powered plane", my webpage on building from plans was given as a link for the answer at Wiki Answers.

I was incorrectly listed in Wikapedia article for model aircraft as the designer of the Denny Dart II. The designer is Neil Dennis who had entered the Denny Dart for an online contest to design a beginners free flight rubber powered model.

There were more organizations and model airplane websites that had linked to me as well. It is just good to see that the material is being used and encourages me to add new content.
